This class will introduce historically based skills and concepts for figure drawing and oil painting. Each lesson will discuss principles such as proportion or gesture and clearly define and demonstrate a path to improvement. The instructor will start by showing how to simplify the subject into accurate shapes and values which are essential for achieving a likeness of the subject. Later, discussion surrounding light, anatomy, and color will help bring refinement and resolution to the painting or drawing. Students unfamiliar with these concepts will begin by drawing in graphite pencil, and more advanced students may work in oils. The model will assume the same pose for multiple sessions so that each lesson can be thoroughly implemented and understood.
